The Varso Tower, being built in the Warsaw district of Wola, is a building of superlatives. With a total height of 310 meters, the office complex will be the tallest building in the EU and will tower over the entire Polish capital when construction is completed in 2020. Several Terex tower cranes of the Polish crane service provider Herkules S.A., which the contractor Warbud is using for this prestigious project, are playing a key role in the construction.

The use of Terex tower cranes was a logical step for the leading Polish crane hire company Herkules for this construction project. “First, Terex Cranes is our preferred crane supplier, so we have a wide selection of cranes from this manufacturer for all conceivable requirements. Second, the CTT 332 and CTL 340 models ordered especially for this project perfectly matched the site conditions by virtue of their high lifting capacities and design. Luffing jib tower cranes such as the CTL 340 are the ideal equipment for building skyscrapers,” explains Mateusz Rychlewski, Sales Director at Hercules. In addition, the two cranes were quickly transported from the nearby Herkules branch near Warsaw to the construction site, where a four-man Herkules team assembled them ready for lifting in four days.

Project support by Terex Cranes

But before then, the Hercules team had a lot of preliminary work to do – after all, such a gigantic construction project requires extremely meticulous planning and coordination with all those involved in the construction. “However, we were able to rely on the support of the Terex Application Engineering Department right from the start,” reports Mateusz Rychlewski. For this project, the Terex team developed both the optimal construction site layout for the tower cranes and the technically sophisticated concept for the successive setup of the cranes parallel to the construction progress of the building. Sound technical expertise was required, particularly for the CTL 340-24 crane, as it is planned for it to “climb” continuously with the building up to a height of 240 meters. And the manufacturer also supported its customers on the construction site itself. A Terex Cranes technical service employee was on site during the entire setup phase and the sales manager in charge, Bartosz Irzyniec, also visited the construction site regularly. This service of the manufacturer is highly appreciated by Herkules. “Our contact with Terex Cranes is based on trust. We can always rely on fast and competent support, which we are happy to take advantage of again and again based on the friendly way we work with each other,” emphasizes Mateusz Rychlewski.

Follow-up projects in sight

For the construction of the Varso Tower, the Terex cranes will remain on site for around two years – and this is probably just the beginning. Mateusz Rychlewski expects a real boom in the construction of tall and very tall buildings in Poland over the next few years. “And with our Terex tower cranes and the support of the Terex Application Engineering Department, we are in an excellent position,” he says, looking to the future with equal optimism for both his company and Terex Cranes.
