In July, Mammoet transported an oversized acid settler tank and base ring weighing nearly 900,000 pounds from Tulsa, Okla., to Robinson, Ill. The tank came into the area by barge via the port in Mount Vernon, Ind. State officials in Indiana and Illinois worked together, as well as local officials to transport the acid refiner on local roads.

“We had to do a lot of coordination of restricted access, so we wouldn’t have any other vehicles out on the road at the same time,” said Geno Koehler, Illinois Department of Transportation’s permit unit chief.
The transporter was 26 axles, and the load was heavy that IDOT was worried about the weight on the individual axles.
On one bridge the load was required to cross, officials were concerned about the weight crossing over the bridge deck. “We actually took additional steel and built a bridge over the top of the bridge,” Koehler said. “We ran it from pier to pier. The load actually goes over the bridge on an alternate bridge over the top of it. The weight did not hit any of the bridge deck; it just stays on the piers.”
