Mammoet has announced the safe completion of a factory-to-foundation project it undertook for a fertiliser company. The client manufactures agriculture fertiliser and industrial nitrogen and required the replacement of a R-101 vessel at its plant in Southern Alberta, Canada.
The vessel was constructed in Austria and Mammoet transported it from Austria to Canada using a variety of transport modes including a barge, a ship, and rail. Once the vessel arrived in Alberta, Mammoet removed the old R-101 vessel, weighing 904,000lbs (410 tonnes). A LR 11350 crane was deployed; at the time it was the biggest crane available in Canada with a boom length of 126 metres and maximum lifting capacity of up to 1,350 tonnes. It was needed because both the old and new vessel needed to be lifted up 72 metres through the roof.
Mammoet says it worked around the clock to prepare and execute the lift and supported the client to minimise their downtime. Mammoet says it safely installed the new vessel within 2.5 hours, one day ahead of schedule.
