A dry dock crane tipped onto a large cruise ship yesterday while undergoing a refit at the shipyard in the Bahamas.
The rail mounted crane fell onto the Oasis of the Seas which is owned and operated by the Royal Caribbean cruise line. According to the local authorities eight people were injured in the incident, although none of them are life threatening. The crane came to rest against the ship, causing it to visibly list towards the crane.
Royal Caribbean Cruises released a statement saying: “We are responding to a construction site incident at the Great Bahamas Shipyard, where Oasis of the Seas is currently in dry dock. We are accounting for the whereabouts of all site personnel and working with local authorities to determine if there have been any injuries. We are aware of damage to the dock structure and to construction cranes. We are assessing damage to the ship.”
The pictures we have seen are not particularly clear and certainly shed no light on what happened. We will update if and when we learn more or receive better photography.
