From May, Canopy & Stars at Crane 29 in Bristol, UK, will be a one bedroom treehouse in a crane that will be available to guests.
This unique accommodation will be the first ever space created and by Canopy & Stars, a company specialising in the great outdoors. Canopy & Stars at Crane 29 will be available for four months, costing £185 for a one-night stay for two on weeknights and £250 for two at weekends.
The treehouse crane is designed and built by specialist treehouse builders Bower House Construction, and is supported by DIY chain B&Q. All profits from Canopy & Stars at Crane 29 will go to Friends of the Earth, meaning that every stay at the treehouse will go towards protecting the natural world, climate and biodiversity.
Dating back to the 1950s and built by British engineering company Stothert & Pitt in Bath, 40 cargo cranes used to line the docks in Bristol to load and unload ships at the port. After the closure of the city docks in 1975, the remaining cranes were sold for scrap. A pressure group was formed to buy back the cranes in 1989.
Managing director Tom Dixon said: “We truly believe there is nothing better than waking up to the great outdoors, seeing, feeling, touching and smelling nature all around you. For the past six years we have been travelling Europe to inspect and select the most special experiences, finding them in the most unusual of spaces. We wanted to use this knowledge to create something special of our own, here in our hometown of Bristol, a hub of ingenuity and creativity with green principles at its heart.”
“We are aiming for a real ‘natural high’, a pocket of nature in the city, something totally unexpected. This will be the first and possibly only ever opportunity to stay in one of these iconic cranes, symbols of Bristol’s industrial heritage. It’s been no easy feat getting this off the ground, Canopy & Stars at Crane 29 is the culmination of three years of planning, an extraordinary seed of an idea that we hope to see finally blossom this summer!”
B&Q customer and marketing director Richard Sherwood added: “We love ambitious projects at B&Q, and what could be more of a challenge than building a home in a crane? We pride ourselves on being the home of brilliant solutions, with ingenious products that provide smart solutions to the challenges of modern living in all our homes. We’re therefore delighted to be Canopy & Stars’ build partner, providing materials and advice to help transform Crane 29 into an innovative treehouse showcasing small space, sustainable, low impact living.”
